It's all in a name

Hey Etsy sellers....
Did you get that emailed announcement from Etsy a few days ago? Apparently they are finally allowing sellers to change their etsy shop names come Oct. 18th. So for the past few days I have been contemplating whether or not I want to change my shop name. In the beginning of Etsy, before it was SO CLEAR that your Etsy account name would ACTUALLY be your shop name, I typed in Lorelei1141.

And immediately regretted the decision as soon as I realized what happened. Can't think of a more ridiculous name for a shop, really.  But I was stuck. Until NOW.
What should one do when they have had the same etsy shop name for the past 4 years? Do you think people find me because my shop is in their Favorites, or because they know to look for
lorelei1141?  or do they search for my full name which is now available for the search engine, lorelei eurto?

If I was to change it, I would change  it just to my full name, Lorelei Eurto. Or should I change it to LoreleiEurtoJewelry. that might be better.

I don't know what to do!

Help!

  1. Hmmmm, good question. I would think that people will already have you saved in their favorites, and others would search for your name. As to which name to choose, both Lorelei Eurto, and Lorelei Eurto Jewelry would work.

  2. I would grasp the opportunity and change to one of those. I like your full name as and idea but that's just me....people will find you, don't worry. I don't search for Lorelei 1141 I search for Lorelei jewelry (and even remember to spell it like that!) and you pop up. Your full name sounds all sophisticated and grown up though. ANd it's your jewellery, your identity. Nice to see them meshed.

  3. I like having jewelry on the end of it. For those people looking for jewelry, then you would pop up in their search.

  4. This news from Etsy has me thinking too. I did the same thing a couple years ago, typed in my name and then realized that I was stuck with that for my shop name! I would change my shop name in a heartbeat if I could...but someone else already has a shop under my business name. :-( If I were you, I would change it to your full name. I think it would better suit your identity than "Lorelei1141". Good luck with your decision!

  5. Hi LoreleiIt is a tough decision to make but I think with your level of success and recognition people will still find you if you changed the name of your shop. If I were you I would definitely want to lose the numbers given the opportunity. Your name has allready become a jewlery fashion icon n so many circles. It is all you need. I know for me the numbers confuse me after your name and I can never remember exactly what they are. I usually check your etsy shop by clicking on the button at your blog which is saved in my favorites.
No matter what you decide it will be fine I am sure.

  6. I'm with Shirley!

I've always been curious about where the 1141 came from, if you care to comment. . .

  7. It's funny, I've been changing everything over to Kristi Bowman Design for some time and always wished and hoped one day I could change my Etsy shop without opening a new one. Now that the time has come it's still kind of scary!! Thanks goodness all of the old links will still work!! I'll change mine for sure but clicking that enter button and doing it isn't going to be easy.

I think just y our name is fine, adding jewelry on the end is good too. I struggled with the same things until I decided to add design to the end.

  8. I think it may be a good opportunity to change your shop name, too. Since your work is always appearing in magazines, I think it would be a great idea - and either just your name or LoreleiEurtoJewelry would work. I just got lucky - I needed to set up a username and happened to choose KatieNelson, so that makes it easier for anyone to find me, if they so desire :o) I don't think too many people will lose you - especially if you send out an e-mail to people ahead of time or post a notice in the shop, or something like that...

It is nice that Etsy is going to allow for that change! It's about time :o)

  9. i agree change it..i closed my first shop due to the stupid name i unwittingly signed up with..DUH..
your full name alone or with either jewelry or designs would work well.
i never could remember the 1141 thing when doing a search.

  10. I think I'm going to change it from GreenBead to Copper Diem so that the blog, email, etc all match. The only sucky thing is that I'd have to get a new FB fan page, but there aren't that many people who "like" it anyway. I dunno, I'm still in the mulling it over stage.

  11. Hi Ladies! Thanks for your input! I seem to be leaning more towards LoreleiEurto now. I rally appreciate your thoughts!

Amy F: I deleted my fan page this morning. It's called Designs by Lorelei and come to find out there is another jewelry shope on etsy with that same name. So I will probably have to start a new one with my coordinating business name.

  12. I would juts have Lorelei Eurto. I found you by lorelei1141 but that was because I typed your last name wrong. If you ever expand from jewelry, you would not need jewelry in your name.

  13. I search on your name, Lorelei, and then pick the right one! I think the LoreleiEurtoJewelry would be good.

  14. Don't forget whatever you change it to Etsy will redirect old name or new name goes to same spot! So really I don't think you can lose!

  15. Ugh - I'm in the same boat, except worse...kinda. I'm Waterstone Jewelry on Etsy. Naturally I should be Studio Waterstone...or should I be LoriPlyler? It is a tough decision. I considered doing the very same post for opinions.

  16. I have never regreted having my name as my businesses name. It really makes it so people associate my business with me. When considering whether to have Jewelry at the end of your name or not, project your thoughts out 5 years. You are very talented - I can possibly see you branching your skills out to other forms of hand crafted beauty. Play out some scenarios in your head of how you'd want to advertise that part of your business. I'm not trying to say this will or won't happen or tell you what to name your business - just to project it out 5 years to make sure you are still happy with it. (By the way, you and your new book rock!)

  17. I definitely would change it to reflect what is in the shop, namely jewelry. Most folks in the business recognize your name "lorelei" immediately, but it would probably be best to include your last name. My jewelry shop is just Gardanne I will change it to GardanneJewelry and keep my GardanneBeads shop the same.

  18. When I am looking for you I normally just put in Lorelei and a list pops up. I then find you from there. I think personally, that Lorelei Eurto Jewelry is perfect because it is not just you, but what you represent as well!
    Good Luck choosing!

  19. I am late to this game, but my $0.02 is change your name. One of the things that I have NEVER liked about Etsy is the search engine. I don't think you will lose anyone by dropping the numbers. You are either bookmarked, familiar, or searched for by your first name and then the trailing numbers are recognized.

Personally, I like Lorelei Eurto Jewelry.
