Cone Challenge Reveal

Welcome to the Keirsten Giles Cone Challenge blog hop!  If you remember, a few weeks back, Keirsten sent me a selection of her handmade copper cones. We picked 5 participants randomly, and the object of the game was to build something fabulous using the cones. Today we are revealing our designs! I am giddy with excited to see what people have done.

I must admit. The last several weeks have been crazy busy and I did not sit down to create my piece until last night. I know. I know. It's not that I was being a slacker. Ok some days I was being a slacker.
But we went away on vacation. I went to Raleigh for 3 days. I have been in and out for the last few weeks with no solid time in the studio.

So my point is. My piece is not all "unique and fresh and totally wild and wacky". I told everyone to use their imaginations with their cones and I couldn't really come up with anything too fabulous I'm afraid. It's just pretty typical. I'm sorry. I hate it when I suck as a role model.

I used my cones with some beautiful hand-dyed acrylic flowers from Heather French of Vintage Meadow Artworks. I had been hoarding these flowers for a while. I wire wrapped the flowers using copper 20 g wire. I spiraled the wire on the inside of the wire. Instead of bunching them (my original un-original idea) I did get a bit crazy and linked the flowers together using copper jumprings by attaching the jump rings to the wire stamens. I added some matte aqua glass ovals with simple loops and jump rings and created a handmade copper wire hook clasp.

My  cones were a bit different than the others in the group Keirsten sent. Mine have sweet little wire poseys around the bottoms. I capped the flowers with the cones.

Be sure to check out the other five participants' blogs to see what they created. I have a feeling you're going to see a lot of really cool things made with these! Warning: Keirsten mostly makes her own components for her own jewelry designs. You may or may not find these cones and other components regularly in her etsy shop.

  2. Well, if you're not happy then I certainly would be! I think it was inspired to pair the cones with those lucite flowers. It's a gorgeous piece - even if you feel rushed your designs still don't look it! Gorgeous work.

  4. On the contrary, I think your design placing the flowers in the cones is quite brilliant and very imaginative! Really beautiful design, not at all typical.

  5. That is stunning and you do not suck as a role model. I love the flowers paired with the cones. It is a perfect match. The blue is just the icing on the cake.

  7. I love what you did and I had some of those flowers sitting on my work table and never thought to use them in this way, great colors.

  8. Agree with everyone above,, this is a beautiful piece. Wish things I put together at the last minute looked any where near as good or as creative.

  9. This piece is just ALL KINDS of cool!!! I love how you used the cones for a touch of metal with those FABULOUS acrylic flowers--like a trumpet bead cap. I love how those trumpet flowers look like lampwork. I assume since there's no link to the artist they're not available online? Piffle. I truly had not thought to use them this way, I think it IS very original!!! It looks wonderful. If I make more of these I am definitely putting the link to this post in the listing--so much awesome creativity!

  11. But, y'know, they make me think of the Regency Era tussie mussies (decorative flower holders, usually of silver, either carried or worn as jewelry)! I love it!

  12. Well, you just stop with your silly self! That necklace is beautiful. I love how, as someone else noted, they look like tussie mussies. I had thought to make a tussie mussie brooch with resin paddle flowers, however, time was a killer amd it didn't happen. Ah well. I love the lucite flowers from Vintage Meadow Artworks, I wish she sold them online. Thanks again for allowing me to participate!

  13. Hot damn but that is amazing! I think that if it weren't for the last minute nothing I do would ever get done and sometimes it gets done better than when I have all the time in the world! I am hoping to pull something amazing out of my hat for a wedding that I am designing for, like yesterday. And I am using some of Heather's flowers in it. You have given me an idea so thanks for that! And what a great color palette for those pretty copper caps. Love it! Enjoy the day, Miss Lorelei. Erin

  15. Girl, you are just crazy, you know it? That is a beautiful necklace! I love how you slid the cones over the flowers. And those little curls on the cones are awesome, I love that style. As usual, you've created a piece that every woman wants to wear. Great job!

  16. That's still more creative than I would have been! I would have just put a bunch of multi-strands in them! So lovely! Great hop!

I absolutely adore this necklace Lorelei. . . you are such a design genius! I would like to buy it if it's for sale. For anyone searching for somewhere to buy Vintage Meadow Artworks floral components, they will be available soon from Lima Beads, and can be bought now from Bead Haven in Franenmuth, MI. The demand for them has been incredible. . . I'm working as hard and fast as I can to get to where I'll have some for sale on Etsy or through my website.
