Video Tutes- KNOTTING
Put together a few videos for you yesterday! Complete with bloopers. ;) I was working on the fly and didn't think about what I would say until I was saying it. So you can laugh at my mess ups. it's funny!
A basic knotting tute.... adding a clasp.... and then stringing and knotting lampwork discs on linen cording. I hope you enjoy these! They were fun to make and I put my tripod to good use finally! Worked out great. If you can think of more ideas for video tutes you'd like to see, just leave me some comments!

What great tutorials, thank you so much for taking the time to show us! I guess I need some irish waxed linen now. Do you use more 4 ply or 2 ply?
ReplyDeleteI have your book and Love it :)
I use 4-ply linen cording.
DeleteVery nice tutorials. Thank you for putting them up. Just a tip--you might want to use and awl or a tweezers to hold and/or move the knot, especially when you're putting on the cup at the end.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the excellent work!
Awesome tip! I don't have any but will try to get my hands on some!
DeleteThanks for the tutorials Lorelei, it's always nice to see how someone else works! I have a question for you - how do you like your Tronex tools? I'm looking to purchase a new set of tools. I had purchased a set of Swanstroms a few years ago and I'm not overly thrilled with them. The super flush cutters didn't survive one fall to the floor (the tip broke off one side) and at $50ish per pair, I wasn't very happy. I've been considering the Tronex.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely recommend the tronex. I did a little video review of my tronex tools- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7gVloN6-pQ
DeleteI bought mine at artbeads.com but you can find them at other retailers as well.
Thanks!
DeleteLorelei you are an angel! I have been following your work for quite some time and love it all but, am especially drawn to working with cords, leather, ribbon, etc. but have been, as you put it, intimidated somewhat by the techniques required. I am a bit of a perfectionist :) so much of my intimidation probably really comes from lack of confidence. I am a visual person and found your tutes to be extremely helpful and just the push I need to get started. Have your book by the way and absolutely love it, very inspiring. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
ReplyDeleteThese are great tutorials, Lorelei! So helpful and clear. It really helps me to see the process. Thank you so much. Now I can work on some projects from the book!
ReplyDeleteI received waxed linen as part of my bead soup and fell in love with it! Even though I have your book and looked through it for my bead soup inspiration, these three tutorials have given me some wonderful new ideas! Thank you Lorelei!
ReplyDeleteReally, really, good stuff here. I've been a little lost with using these techniques and seeing it happen live is great. Thank so much!
ReplyDeleteHow about a tutorial on wire wrapping briolettes? I try and try and get quite frustrated!! It would be helpful to watch how you do it!
ReplyDeleteLove seeing your tutorials. Thanks for the info.
Ditto to the frustration with briolettes! Mine just never quite look right.
DeleteI really like my cutter, but I have the same problem you were having with the spring falling off. I just noticed again tonight it has gone missing once again. I will have to put a new Tronix pair on my wish list.
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorials !! I have shied away from knotting as I always thought it was so difficult. I only tried it once with thicker cotton and it was ok but now I am inspired to get some waxed linen and especially some of those cute disc beads. Thanks so much for your help.
ReplyDeleteBrilliants tutes! I have always gone for the rustic look and just knotted straight onto the jump ring or clasp, but I might try those knot cups. Might have to use jewellery cement inside though, I'd be frightened my knots would come undone, paranoid! I love the disc knotting at the end. I used to do that technique quite a lot a few years ago - even ran a class which used it - but I haven't done any for ages. I think I will do some today! I used fat seed beads instead of the knots between discs and some funky little glass doughnut beads which my bead shop immediately discontinued of course. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThe YouTube tuts are so helpful for visual learners. Thank you! I'd love to see a tut on finishing sari silk, ribbon ends & leather. I find the fold over ends impossible to use and would like to see some other methods.
ReplyDeleteAlong those same lines, I've tried finishing leather or thicker cord ends by wrapping the folded over ends with wire. Written directions always say that at the end you should "tuck in the end of the wire". How do you push the wire end under the previous wire wraps? Some how this just escapes me! I'd really like to see that done!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you for your tuts. Also for linking me to Thea's tut. I was wondering how that was done.
ReplyDeleteGreat tuts, Lorelei.
ReplyDeleteDitto, ditto on wire wrapping briolettes.
Ditto on using an awl. I use it for knotting pearls and you'll get amazing tight knots especially in the end cups (I add a drop of hypo glue).
Hint from my sewing days - use regular scissors to cut the waxed linen. You'll eventualy dull your beautiful Tronex. I only cut metal with mine.
Linda - There's a great free tut on Beaducation by Kim St. Jean about making wire end caps - yes, there is a great way to totally hide the ends!
I can show you how I do my wire wrapped ends on leather. I usually tuck the end in between the leather and the tail.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense, but I'd still love to see a demo, Lorelei. Thanks for asking people what they are looking for. :)
DeleteLorelei--you started my love of waxed linen cord--it is so great to work with and give the piece such a fluid drapey look. I loved watching your tutes and look forward to more. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThese were very very helpful! Right from how to make the overhand knot nice and snug to how to layer buttons.
ReplyDeleteI just bought my first batch of waxed Irish linen and this came at the right moment for me.
Thank you! You make a great teacher :)
Love your tutorials, keep them coming!
ReplyDeleteGreat tuts Lorelei! I use my knotting tweezers (instead of my awl) most of the time to snug my knots into cups or up against my beads. The points are super tiny and they hold your cording like your fingers do, plus they make getting a knot exactly where you want it very easy. Also, should you need to 'move' or worse yet, re-move your knot, they're great for getting into very tight places because they're so tiny they act like a needle. I've got a pearl knotting video I did that shows this, but for some reason it won't post on blogger for me so I will have to re-do it. Knotting those disks looks much easier than when I do it with my disk pearls because their holes are much bigger. With the pearls I find I have to drill them out larger and risk chipping the nacre,...I'm going to try it with glass disks and see how much better that works. Thanks for sharing these tutorials, they're really nice.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting these tutorials, I am bookmarking these! I really enjoyed the disc knotting technique (so that is how it is done)! I also love the basic knotting technique. I took a knotting class a few years ago and they taught us by using tweezers. Your technique is so much more efficient! The whole reason I never continued knotting after that class was because it was a pain in the a*s and beyond tedious! Your technique has inspired me to knot once again! :)
ReplyDeleteLorelei, thanks for the great tutorials. Going to try the disc knotting technique on some of my enamel pieces! I have watched some of your videos before, but listening to you today it struck me that you must be from somewhere near my neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteAwesome tutorials Lorelei! Loved those knotted disc beads, very cool and pretty!
ReplyDeletethank you.
