My Friend Nancy

Nancy is my friend. She's super cool, and I love her to death. Not only because she buys cars from me, (she just bought my Mitsubishi).... and not only because she travels all over the world with me, (she's accompanying me to Madrid, and then Paris in 2011)... and not only because when she visits, she brings me goodies.  Nancy's grand opening of her brand new Big Cartel shop is only a few days away. On Monday, she'll be opening  a new store, with a nice selection of new components in limited qualities.  She brought a few of these newbies to me yesterday when she came to pick up the Mitsubishi.

I couldn't get home from work yesterday, fast enough.  Ran up to the studio and was completely inspired by her new work. I put together a few things to show off for today. First up,  a lovely little pair of earrings that feature some new decorative rings. The glaze on these is so cool, it's white with black- goes great with any color but I decided to pair them with Vintaj Brass components and leafy green faceted briolettes.

Next up, a simple copper chain necklace that features some charms, one of which is one of the new "shards" that Nancy glazed up pretty and blue. I love the organic shape of this pendant. I paired it with some deep magenta and labradorite and copper round link chain.

And finally, the mack daddy. It's been awhile since I've created a "statement" piece. I knew when I saw this new Sunflower pendant, I wanted to make a statement. I designed an asymmetrical necklace with large flat teal and khaki stones (jasper, of some sort, I'm sure) that I got at Bead Fest, along with some Mother of Pearl rings, faceted teal quartz rounds, brass spacer rounds, and finished it all off with a nice coordinating sunflower claps from Green Girl Studios.  FAB-U-LoUs!! oh yea!
The little holes at the bottom of the pendant, almost threw me off. I'm not really normally a "lots of little dangles" type of girl but I knew I couldn't just leave them empty so I wire wrapped simple glass rounds in a coordinating color. I love how they add to the pendant, and don't take away from the "statement" it's making.

Tomorrow Joe and I are going to visit Nancy as she's selling at one of her yearly shows- a Music and Arts Festival in Norwich NY.  I'm hoping to pick up a few Christmas gifts, and maybe a pair of earrings- I have my eye on these!  I'll bring my camera to take some pics at the show, and will show them tomorrow evening.
Hope you all have a great weekend!

  4. That necklace really is the mack daddy, you did an amazing job on all three pieces. I am drooling over the flower pendant. I hope Nancy makes more of those because I want one.

I sometimes can't appreciate assymmetric designs as much as they should be appreciated (much like poetry and jazz - I think I'm not smart enough) - but the sunflower piece feels balanced in the most exquisite way - I love it!

Love the focal bead, too. You and Nancy are a match made in heaven!

  6. You know I'm no beader or jeweler, but I was once almost an art major (not that that counts for much). Anyway, it's been a long time since I've really, really been moved by someone's talent. Who would have thought from a beader/jeweler?:-) I just think your work is amazing.

Sorry to lay it on so thick this morning. I just couldn't help myself.

  7. That last piece is the Mack Daddy all right! There are so many things to love about it too. The pendant is awesome. The stones, the clasp, the colors and the way the clasp is offset like that. I LOVE it!

  15. You did pick Big Cartel! (You don't know me but we chatted on Nancy's FB page about it) I love your work, I'm happy to have found it.

I also love Nancy. More than I know her. But she's just so obviously solidly Nancy, and it's a good thing.

Today in my studio I'm making a strange sculpted wool vest that I think is going be topped off with some funky Round Rabbit buttons. yay!

  16. These pieces are all lovely, and Nancy is one talented woman for being able to create such magnificent things to work with. I especially love what you did with the last one.

I am anticipating that blog post you mentioned in your last post about inspiration vs. copying. I'm not going to lie; I gravitated toward your blog because the things I was seeing you make in the magazines were slightly similar in tone to some things that I make. Being a newcomer to your blog, I felt rather unwelcome by all these anti-copying posts lately. It even made me think twice about one of my own design decisions, as if my wanting to add three beads in an asymmetrical necklace was making me a copy cat. Ludicrous. For others new to this hobby/profession, I think it would be very beneficial to get your views out clearly on the distinction. I know I'm not going to be buying any magazines in the near future and am even mostly staying away from blogs now. This is just one of the ways such publicity actually harms a part of the sharing of work out there, and that's a real shame because it's mainly just a few wrongful individuals that ruin it for everyone else.

This is not to say that I don't sympathize. Because people look to you as a beacon, as a person who is successful, you are bound to get the jealous and greedy types who will try to nab a bit of that success for themselves. It's not right, but it comes with the territory. Even still, you have every right to be angry when you see someone copying, element by element, one of your pieces. Just please don't hold the rest of us responsible for it. I didn't watch your blog to steal your ideas, but felt that I got lumped in with those who do.

Anyway, yes, I am very much looking forward to your article on the subject.

  17. Sorry, didn't realize my comment went through on this post. It gave me some weird error message.
