Supporting Handmade

My etsy shop is closed today, May 10, 2012. I am supporting and defending GENUINE HANDMADE.
I am concerned when I see Etsy featuring resellers on the front page. I am concerned when I hear that Etsy has closed up a shop because the seller breathed mention of jumping ship. I am concerned when I do a search and see nothing but crap and non-handmade items like furniture and high end jewels.
I have been on Etsy since 2007. Back in the day, it was a beautiful place with nothing but wonderful and talented handmade artisans. It's much different now.
So in a silent protest, I have joined 4200+ shops and have put the shop in vacation mode for 24 hours.  I will not be shopping at Etsy shops today, as well.

If you would like to participate and support handmade, check out the site Protesty.com.

  1. Im surprised to hear this. I've been shopping on etsy since 2007 and only now have I started to set up a new shop. For various reasons I've been staying away from etsy these last many months, so I had no idea this was the case. Very concerning.

  2. Thanks for letting us know. That is concerning! We have a market place like etsy in Germany too - same there. Guess that's what happens when the runners of those sites realize how much money the can make...it's a shame:-(

  3. I thought the whole point of Etsy was that you could only open a shop if your items are handmade by you or you are selling craft supplies. I must really be in the dark because I had no idea they were allowing re-sellers. I thought that was a big Etsy no-no! I admire your courage to stand up for handmade!! I am researching this topic to learn more.

  4. Good for you! Just to reinforce the problem, the front page of Etsy currently features "vintage" but "like new" keds, sunglasses, a skirt, a Mikasa ceramic creamer and a body suit. None of which were ever handmade. It makes me sad...

  5. I hope etsy takes notice of your protest and cleans up their act. I have seen some of the resellers being called out by regretsy, but they have so many to be weeded out. It seems overwhelming!

  6. I'm late to the party but just put my shop on vacation in support of handmade. I too had no idea until i saw it on another blog, hope we can effect a change with this, I would hate to lose what Etsy began.

  7. I just put my shop on vacation too late in the day today - so disturbed by what is happening at Etsy lately! I have seen this happening for some time and can't decide what to do for myself.

  8. Thanks for opening our eyes to the problem. I have noticed a lot of changes, but I've been too busy to really think about it. I will have to do a little research on it myself. I hope they took notice of your protest and start getting back to the wonderful site they are known for.
